Fieldwork/ clinical experiences is an integral component to the Graduate programs. In Teacher Education, fieldwork consists of experiences in P-12 settings, consulting with a mentor who has experience in the field and is certified in a candidate’s program of study, and hands-on experience with lesson planning, classroom management, giving lessons, and participating in school meetings and functions.
Candidates with field placement program requirements record P-12 experiences, assessments, and other data as required by the instructor, mentor, or supervisor.
Candidates who are employed in a school may in some cases complete fieldwork in their employment setting.
All Masters students enrolled in programs in Counselor Education have to complete clinical practice coursework. This includes Practicum and Internship. These are supervised experiences that require both individual (and triadic) and group supervision. Each individual program in Counselor Education requires a different amount of clinical hours depending on the specialization.
Students can find specific information about clinical practice experiences (Practicum and Internship) in the Master’s Professional Practice Handbook. Students will also be introduced to requirements and specifics related to application for these experiences as part of their program area orientation and informational sessions. Students will be required to purchase liability insurance based on their specialty area.
